Your adrenal glands—small organs located above the kidneys make and release cortisol. In addition to
cortisol, adrenal glands also produce hormones that help improve your immune system, blood pressure,
response to stress, balance your metabolism and dispense sex hormones. The body responds to stress by
producing hormones like cortisol. When faced with long-term uncontrolled stress (mental, physical
and/or emotional), cortisol levels tend to rise and the adrenal glands cannot keep up with the body’s
need for these hormones leading to adrenal fatigue.
