Thyroid Hormone Therapy

WHAT IS THYROID HORMONE?

The butterfly shaped thyroid gland sits on the lower portion of the front of your neck, below your Adam’s apple just in front of the windpipe. The thyroid secretes many hormones, mainly thyroxine (T4) , which converts to the active form of thyroid called triiodothyronine (T3) by an enzyme. Thyroid hormones are considered the body’s “regulator” as it influences all of the metabolic processes in your body.
Common thyroid problems involve either too much or too little production of thyroid hormone. An increase of thyroid hormones is called hyperthyroidism and a decrease of thyroid hormones is called hypothyroidism.
